Today is National High Five Day! If you have been following our blog over the last few months, you’ve probably noticed that we love odd/random/quirky holidays. National High Five Day is no different and it also reminds us how important it is to lift each other up and encourage each other. I think it not only puts us all in a better mood, but also helps us work better together – and who doesn’t want that?
Our company is somewhat unique in that that majority of our employees are spread out throughout the country. We don’t have a large corporate office with a lot of folks stationed there and a few people sprinkled around the country (a more typical scenario). We have a lot of people around the country…and a few folks sprinkled across 3 physical office buildings. So as you can imagine in our scenario, it’s kind of hard to high five your co-worker from across the country.
So how do we encourage each other both in the office and long distance? Here are a few ways:
We have Nerf wars
Some people may take offense to random Nerf projectile to the head. Not at GISi! Here, it’s a sign that you’re not only a valuable asset to the company…but also that you’re a worthy opponent, which is encouraging. We like a little friendly competition, and if it involves grabbing a Nerf gun and shooting it across the office from time to time, even better!
We Support Women in GIS
Despite the fact that many of our ladies work remotely, our Women in GIS Group collaborates on Yammer and also meets via conference call from time to time to discuss and address challenges and opportunities for women in our industry. The group inspires all of us to grow professionally and have a clear vision for our careers. It is comprised of women from all over our company in various roles and departments and we’re happy to see the number of new group members growing.
Our ESOP Committee is awesome
Not only does the employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) at GISi rock, but so do the volunteers that make up our ESOP committee. The members of this committee are always educating us all on the various aspects of our plan…all while making it the learning process fun and enjoyable for all of us. This could be anything from a fun presentation at our company meetings, to ESOP related trivia questions on our internal social network where folks can win prizes for getting the correct answer. We love our ESOP committee and all the great stuff they do to get us all excited about being employee owners.
We rag on each other…but we’re also quick to give praise where it’s due
There is always a slight possibility you may check the Yammer feed and see your mug shot artfully Photoshopped by one of your coworkers. We do this because we love you…and it’s funny. But along with that surprise, you may also be sitting in our monthly company meeting and hear someone from the management team give you a shout out for all the awesome work you have been doing. So while you might be a dog one day, rest assured you’ll be a “top dog” the next.
We each genuinely want to see everyone be successful in what they're doing
There is a lot to be said for people who you can call up, make an odd request, and have them not only show interest in what you’re trying to accomplish…but also go to the ends of the earth to help you out. This is what it’s like working for GISi. It may be because of the employee ownership culture we have. It may be that we’ve managed to hire a lot of genuinely nice people. I personally have a feeling that it’s both. In any case, it’s an absolutely wonderful way of supporting and encouraging each other.
So there you have it. Even though we cannot all be together all the time…we’re still pretty close-knit and encourage each other all the time. We’re also always looking for new folks to rag on…er….recruit for our open positions. Feel free to pass these along to anyone you know who might want to join our family.
