The Unofficial Guide to Having Fun at the 2016 Esri UC

This list is pretty much as unofficial as it gets. Here are a few activities we recommend you try while you're at the UC.

AT THE UC:

Party at the GISinc Booths 2317 & 2418!

It’s our 25th birthday! Stop by and help us celebrate. Grab some candy, chat it up with our folks in the booth, and check out how we have been innovating with our latest projects.

We also have an IoT booth (#2418) to showcase how we are changing the way businesses and governments operate.

When stopping by booth # 2317, show us how smart you are by guessing how many pieces of candy are in a 30oz Yeti Tumbler which will be a part of a Yeti give-away package worth $500. It's our way of saying thank you for helping us grow and thrive over the last 25 years.

Marvel Over Maps

Monday, June 27, 3:30 – 7pm

Do you love maps? Of course you do! Which, is why you should be at the Map Gallery Opening and Evening Reception. Check your agenda and put a big circle around the Map Gallery events. You’ll be inspired for sure.

Try Speed Geeking

Tuesday, July 15, 3:15 pm – 5:00 pm

As a developer-focused activity, SpeedGeeking gets its name and style from speed dating. SpeedGeeking features 12 presenters who, at the same time, will be giving lightning talks to a group of attendees. After each 5-minute presentation, the cowbell rings and attendees rotate around to the next table to hear about the next dev topic. Participants will get to see 8 topics and have some time to chat with the presenters. Be ready for some fun!

Esri SAG Awards

Wednesday, June 29, 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Ah the Special Achievement in GIS awards…we love this event. Not only because we’ve seen dozens of our clients win SAGs, but because oftentimes we get lost in the “how it works” and “what it does” parts of the GIS solutions we develop. Not to mention, it is nice to have the opportunity to step back and recognize the full impact of what your client has been able to accomplish with you on their side. Sometimes it’s saving lives, other times it’s improving the environment. These awards show us all how GIS can change the world for the better…this is an event that will inspire you.

Party on at Balboa

Thursday, June 30th 5:30 – 10pm at Balboa Park

Who doesn’t love a good party? Don't miss this opportunity to wrap up the UC by enjoying one the gems of San Diego. There will be beautiful museums, great food, awesome entertainment, interactive games and activities for the whole family.

ACTIVITIES:

Get Your Yoga On – UC Style

Yoga is an amazing way to prep your mind and body for the long days of conference activities. Here’s why…

Yoga helps alleviate stress - Just a few minutes of yoga can relax your body and calm your mind by releasing all of the tension that’s accumulated in your muscles. Whatever drama you endured on your trip to San Diego – it’s melted with just a few minutes of yoga.

Yoga helps introverts - When you’re at the UC, you’re often meeting and socializing with new people, old colleagues, friends and co-workers. Sometimes the constant interaction can be overwhelming, especially to those who are more introverted. Yoga relaxes your mind and helps improve your relationships, including your professional relationships. If socializing has a tendency to wear you out, try some yoga to help put your mind in the right place.

Yoga helps hangovers - For anyone at the UC who might overdo it the night before (you know who you are), yoga can help beat a hangover. Postures like fish, shoulder stand and plow work on the thyroid…which can help you get rid of your hangover faster.

If you’re interested in some UC Yoga, meet up with everyone on the grass just outside the Hilton Bayfront and along the Embarcadero. Yoga will be in session from 6:30-7:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Single class passes are available.

The 2016 Esri 5K Fun Run/Walk

Wednesday, June 29. The starting gun goes off promptly at 6:30 a.m. (you must register in advance)

If you’ve never completed a 5K, now is your chance! It’s fun…we promise. Plus, there are all kinds of nifty fitness apps to help you prepare (did you really think we would write an article like this without nerding out just a little?)

Of course there is the Couch to 5K app, Map My Run, Zombies, Run! and so many more. The Zombies, Run! app simulates a zombie apocalypse world where you are being chased by zombies ready to tear you to bits. It really can’t be beat – plus the folks behind you in the race might eventually start looking a bit zombie-like so it could be the perfect app to have ready to go on your phone.
